Family Paintings
I am presently looking for family portrait commissions. To read more about the family painting project please scroll to the bottom of this page.
This portrait has been selected for the BP Portrait awards exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery in London from 24 June - 19 September 2010, the exhibition will then go on tour where it will be shown at the Usher Gallery, Lincoln and the Aberdeen Art Gallery.

The family painting project is not standard portrait work but a personal project for which I am looking for participants. My aim is to make the most beautiful painting I can using you and your family as my inspiration, towards the creation of a group of family paintings that will eventually be shown together and made into a book of paintings and essays. With your permission, the author Laurence Drake will be present during some of the painting sessions and will write essays based on the relationship between the model and the work in progress, as well as the interaction with the artist. She will then write her own portrait around the family and the process of the painting coming into existance. Excerpts from her first piece about the making of the painting of Sylvia and George will soon be posted on my website under "Book Projects."
I am looking for a family portrait commission to start immediately ( to complete through the spring), as well as families to work with next fall and winter. I am also open to the possibility of working on a family painting during the summer holiday. Please contact me with your proposed project and I will email you my 2009/2010 portrait price list. As I am eager to advance this project , I am offering a special discount of approximately 30 percent off my listed prices for any painting commissioned during April and May. A few notes about how I work on the family paintings:
These paintings are made exclusively from life in my sitter's homes. They take me anywhere from 5 to 25 six-hour-long sessions to complete, depending on the number of subjects and the scale of the work. In the case of large and complex paintings the majority of the time that I am in your house is spent working on the sourrounding environment and does not demand much time from any one subject.
I need to see the whole family together at the beginning of the painting process but then each family member models for me individually (except with someone like George, who never once "modeled" but simply ignored me and thus I was able to paint him whenever he was more or less in the same position). The time I spend painting someone depends on their willingness to model and where they are placed in the composition. I will easily spend two or three times longer with someone in the foreground of a painting than someone in the background.
I try to estimate how much time each family member will be willing or able to give me when creating the composition for the painting. Some subjects in the paintings you see on my website modeled for only a few hours, others for as many as 20 hours (spread over several sessions).

Aujourd’hui, je cherche activement des familles qui voudraient se prêter au jeu, devenir ma source d'inspiration, servir de modèle dans le but de faire partie, à terme, d'une série de portraits exposés ensemble et rassemblés dans un livre, où écriture et peintures seront liés.
Dans le respect des liens qui unissent les êtres que je peindrais et la volonté de rendre visible cette communauté aux contours si particuliers qu’est la famille, mon projet de peinture de familles se veut une recherche d’autonomie de la représentation, au delà d'une simple juxtaposition de portraits, ou d’une maîtrise de mon art.

Avec votre permission, l'auteur, Laurence Drake, sera présente pendant certaines séances de pose. Elle écrira autour du rapport entre le Modèle et l'œuvre en gestation, l'interaction avec l'artiste, le surgissement de l'être. A son tour elle esquissera un portrait, essai aux confluents des impressions et des choses vues, des conversations et du silence plein, émergeant de ce moment unique de la rencontre entre le modèle et l’artiste et l’écrivain.

Quelques notes sur ma démarche:
Ces peintures sont exclusivement extraites des moments de vie de mes modèles chez eux. Suivant le nombre de personnes à représenter et l’échelle du tableau, cela peut me prendre de 5 à 25 scéances de pose de 6 heures. Dans le cas de grands sujets, une grande partie de mon temps est passé à peindre l’environnement, l’intérieur dans lequel pose la famille, et ne demande donc pas de temps de pose particulier aux modèles.
J’ai besoin de voir la famille réunie au moins au départ de mon travail. Ensuite, chaque membre pourra poser pour moi séparément et suivant ses libertés. Le temps passé par moi à peindre quelqu’un dépends de sa volonté de se prêter au jeu et de sa position dans la composition. Trois fois plus de temps peut être nécessaire pour peindre quelqu’un au premier plan par rapport à quelqu’un qui serait situé dans le fond de la pièce.
Cette disponibilité de chacun, estimée au départ, détermine ma construction du tableau. Quelques-unes des sujets dans les peintures de familles visibles sur le site ont été réalisées en quelques heures d’autres en 20 heures. Si vous avez des enfants, je serais heureuse de pouvoir réaliser un tableau avec eux et vous, c’est un défi (ils vont bien-sûr remuer) qui me plairait particulièrement.
